Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie
This is the smoothie we make most often: frozen strawberries, plain yogurt and a little milk, with a few oats to make it more filling. It tastes like a strawberry milkshake but is much less sweet.
Plain yogurt gives you control over the sweetness. Taste after blending and add honey only if your berries need it; peak-season strawberries usually don't.

Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie
Ingredients
Method
- If using oats, put them in the blender first and pulse a few times to break them up.
- Add the milk, yogurt, strawberries and vanilla.
- Blend on high for about 1 minute, scraping down the sides once if needed, until completely smooth.
- Taste and blend in honey if you want it sweeter. Pour and serve right away.
Notes
- Let frozen berries sit for 5 minutes before blending if your blender is not very powerful.
- Greek yogurt makes a thicker, spoonable smoothie; regular yogurt pours more easily.
Fresh strawberries instead of frozen
If you only have fresh strawberries, hull them and add 4–5 ice cubes or half a frozen banana so the smoothie is cold and thick. In early summer, when local berries are at their best, it is worth hulling and freezing a few bags for later.
Choosing yogurt
Whole-milk yogurt gives the richest texture, while low-fat yogurt makes a lighter drink. Greek yogurt is strained and much thicker, so you may need an extra splash of milk. Flavored yogurts often contain a lot of added sugar, which is why we start with plain and sweeten to taste. If you buy organic strawberries frozen, check the bag for any added syrup; plain frozen berries contain only fruit.
Variations
- Strawberry-banana: add half a ripe banana and reduce the milk slightly.
- Strawberry-orange: use fresh orange juice instead of milk for a tangier, brighter drink.
- Strawberry-oat: double the oats and add a pinch of cinnamon for a breakfast-style shake.
Variations and swaps
- Use a mix of berries, or half strawberries and half frozen peaches.
- Use coconut or soy yogurt and plant milk for a dairy-free version.
- Add a tablespoon of nut butter for a heartier drink.
Storing and reheating
Drink within a few hours, or refrigerate in a sealed jar for up to 1 day and shake before serving. Leftovers can also be frozen in ice-pop molds.
